What if my product doesn't sell?

You pay the monthly rent to the retailer, and that's it. If nothing sells, that's your risk — but a small one compared to a year-long lease or a multi-thousand-euro pop-up.

How fast can I start?

It depends on the retailer. You request a spot, the retailer replies personally and you agree on a start date together. Dropping off products happens in one visit.

What kind of stores participate?

Only independent, KvK-verified Dutch stores. Bookshops, boutiques, concept stores, delis — no chains, no franchises.

Question 4

Do I have to be in the store myself?

Accepted Answer

No. The retailer staffs the till and helps customers. You bring your stock and display, and the retailer does the rest.

Can I cancel monthly?

Accepted Answer

Yes, always monthly. There's no minimum term longer than one month. No penalties, no hidden fees.

What happens in case of damage or theft?

SpotShelf does not provide a platform-level liability addendum in V1 — host and tenant arrange that between themselves in line with their own insurance. The retailer's store insurance typically covers the building and their own stock. You insure your own products yourself, or accept it as business risk. Discuss this in your first message to the retailer so you're both aligned.

What if the tenant damages my shop?

SpotShelf does not provide a platform-level liability clause in V1 — damage matters are resolved by mutual agreement with the tenant. Your shop insurance typically covers the building and your own inventory. Agree upfront on how you handle breakage, theft, or complaints and capture it in the messages (retained in the booking history). The tenant's products are at their own risk.

Do I have to charge VAT on rental income?

For most KvK-registered retailers, rental income counts as regular business turnover — you charge VAT on the rent and invoice as you would for any service. Check with your accountant how this works for your specific situation.

What if I'm under the small-business scheme (KOR)?

Accepted Answer

Under the KOR you don't charge VAT on the rent. Be aware that the KOR turnover cap (€20,000 per calendar year) also applies to rental income. Ask your accountant whether SpotShelf rent could push you closer to the cap.

How do I know the brand is legitimate?

Accepted Answer

Every brand is KvK-verified before they can send applications. You get a profile with product photos, prior placements, and reviews from other retailers. You always decide yourself whether they fit your shop.

Can I refuse a tenant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, always. A request is not an obligation — you accept or refuse based on your own judgment. You don't have to give a reason.

How often and when do I get paid?
